Here is a selection of the many and varied cyclosportives
available within an hour’s drive of our base. Many include the famous
cols ridden by the Tour de France riders each year. There
are not many sports where you can follow in the wheels of these famous
riders.

28th
A Travers les vignobles de Saint Mont
Two courses 112km or 74km. The route takes you through
the roads and lanes of the vineyards
in the west of the department of the Gers.
Entry fee 20 euros includes, hot drink on arrival, showers, bottle of
wine, snacks, goody bag and tombola.

7th
A Travers les vignobles de Madiran
Two courses 92km and 68km climbing 702m or 263m. The
route crosses the Madiran vineyards, undulating but sheer joy.
Entry 20 euros with a bottle of wine, snacks, hot drinks on arrival,
buffet to finishers, and a gift.

110k route on wide roads for rider safety and climbing of 1200m.

24th
La Traversee des Baronnies
Held every 2 years on a course of 81k but 2000m of climbing through
fabulous scenery. There are 5000 euros in tombola prizes. 1387
riders started in 2008. You have a choice of 3 more courses, 74k-1771m,
62k-1418m, 41k-582m.
Entry is only 7 euros with a buffet on the finish line.
Starting at Mont de Marsan, to the north of Pau
in the Department of the Landes, no major climbing involved in this one
but still fairly up and down, so should be pretty quick. La Luis Ocana
is part of the Trophee Label D'Or series of Sportives. Distances
and climbing of the circuits: 150, 100 and 50kms, height 965m-valley course.
Number of entries in 2009 was 530.
Entry fee for the first 2 courses 26 euros inc a meal.15 euros inc meal
for the 50km.There will be a gift for each rider, petit dejeuner, hot
lunch, prizes to the first 3 in each category in the long course, tombola
draw and showers.
3 choices for this Pyrenees special as each includes the Col
du Tourmalet, 2114m,which celebrates 100 years since it became a Tour
de France climb. “Les 4 Vallees” at 174km(3300m)
is the longest passing over the Horquette d’Ancizan, Col d’Aspin
and Tourmalet.
The “3 Vallees is 131km (2100m) climbing La cote de Loucrup, 562m,
Le Col des Palomieres, 810m, and the Tourmalet. Finally the 102k “Les
2 Vallees” offering a total of 1825m over La cote de Loucrup and
the Tourmalet.

4th
La Hubert Arbes
Lourdes is the town start of the event organised by Hubert Arbes,
a super domestique of Bernard Hinault, 5 times winner of the Tour de France.
Two routes take riders either 107km or 159km, with both courses taking
the east ascent of the Col du Tourmalet. Then the shorter route heads
back to Lourdes while the longer uses the Col des Borderes and the Col
du Soulor.
Entry fee is 25 euros. A generous meal, commemorative bottle of wine,
surprise gift and personal certificate are inclusive. Also timed certificate
for your climb of the Col du Tourmalet. There are 15,000 euros prizes
in the tombola.
With a choice of 3 rides the La Pierre Jacques has something
for all abilities. The longest at 161km the La Pierre Jacques
offers 3 cols and climbing of 4100m. The middle one is the L’Issaux
combining 121km, 2 cols and 2700m upwards. Third is the 67km, 1 col, 1410m
Le Soudet-Pierre St Martin after the local ski resort.
An entry fee of 25 euros provides a diploma and substantial meal.
There are 3 courses on offer. The cyclotourist at 68km with a gentle
cat 3 climb of the Col des Ares. Next is the 105km event over the Port
de Bales, 1755m, and finally 148km ride over both the Port de Bales as
well as the Col de Peyrasourde.
The entry fee is 27euros including a meal, tombola, goody bag and bike
top.
Based at Bagneres de Luchon is named after 3 Tour de France brothers.
La Lapébie the long one at 156km(3400m) includes the Port de Bales,
La Serge Lapébie, 107km(2185m) includes the Col de Mente and Guy
Lapébie 59km(870m). All routes cross into Spain and return over
the Col du Portillon
